Catholicism


·      Catholicism was a religion that was founded before the city was even established by the French.
·      39% of the total population of New Orleans are Catholics.
·      St. Augustine Catholic Church of New Orleans was the first black church in Louisiana and first black Catholic Church in the United States. 
·      Catholicism was established in New Orleans 224 years ago on April 25, 1793
·      The current pope is Pope Francis.

 
  • There are currently 107 Parishes in New Orleans
St Louis Cathedral
  • The French built the first one in 1727, following the town plan. It stood, weathered, until the Great Fire of 1788, when Spanish dons were ruling. Rebuilt with funds from local notary and real estate developer Andres Almonester y Rojas, the second church barely escaped the flames of yet another general fire in 1794.

  • According to the National Parks Service, “This is the finest surviving example of French Colonial public architecture in the country, Louis XV in style, formal and symmetrical, with restrained ornament. It was constructed between 1748 and 1752 for nuns whose mission was to nurse the poor and teach young girls”
